Dr. Ouwei Wang graduated from UC Berkeley with a Ph.D. in Microbiology. After spending several years elucidating the physiology and molecular mechanisms of microbial perchlorate respiration, he transitioned his research focus from environmental to applied microbiology. He leveraged fundamental knowledge of microbial metabolism to build applied molecular tools, including the microbial contamination control system that enables contamination resistant continuous fermentation. Upon graduating from UC Berkeley, Ouwei founded Pow.Bio, a startup that is developing intelligent continuous fermentation technologies to unlock the future of sustainable biomanufactured products. Pow.Bio’s nimble, scalable and CapEx light technology stack features AI-controlled, automated software seamlessly integrated within a novel fermentation system.

From Proof to Production: Building a More Efficient Biomanufacturing Journey with Pow.Bio and Bühler
Biomanufacturing is entering a new phase, where customers want more than promising technology - they need proof that a true path to scale actually exists. In this session, Pow.Bio CEO Shannon Hall will share how Pow.Bio’s AI-enabled continuous fermentation platform is helping to solve the toughest challenges around scalability, commercialization, and what it really takes to move from process development to production. A key part of that story is Pow.Bio’s partnership model, including how collaboration with Bühler is helping create a more integrated, practical route to market. The talk will also look at how industrial automation is building more connected operations that support faster decisions and better economics.

From Cells to Patients: Solving the Scale Mismatch in Virtual Biology
Drug discovery often measures biology at the cell level while interventions work at the tissue, organ, or whole-patient scale. This mismatch can make accurate cell-level predictions irrelevant in the clinic. This session dives into strategies to bridge that gap: multiscale modeling that nests single-cell dynamics within organ-level simulations, spatial transcriptomics that preserve context, and surrogate models that translate cell-level outputs into clinical biomarkers. Speakers will ask: how do we ensure virtual biology reflects not just what cells do in isolation, but how biology behaves in the real complexity of patients?
