Originally from beautiful Split, Croatia, Inja received her PhD from The University of Cambridge, MRC LMB, in molecular and synthetic biology and Master’s from ETH Zurich in biophysics and protein structure. After completing postdoctoral research, she worked in analytical consulting in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries before joining Matt Gibson to co-found New Culture as part of IndieBio, the world’s leading biotech start-up accelerator. New Culture is a pioneer in animal-free casein protein production, enabling the company to produce functional and delicious dairy cheese not dependent on animal agriculture supply chain. At New Culture, Inja leads the company’s R&D, technology, manufacturing and product pipelines.

Industrial biotech faces repeated “valleys of death” between laboratory success and commercial manufacturing, driven by a combination of technological uncertainty, scale-dependent constraints, and (mis)alignment between engineering reality and investment expectations. From Cells to Patients: Solving the Scale Mismatch in Virtual Biology
Drug discovery often measures biology at the cell level while interventions work at the tissue, organ, or whole-patient scale. This mismatch can make accurate cell-level predictions irrelevant in the clinic.
