BioSolutions

Biology is becoming an industrial platform, competing on performance rather than virtue.

It starts with what we eat: alternative proteins and precision fermentation ingredients answering land constraints, climate volatility, and demand for alternatives to animal agriculture. Upstream, engineered traits and biological inputs are pushing yield and resilience without proportionally more land, water, or chemistry. Further out, bio-based routes are displacing petroleum in chemicals, plastics, materials, and fuels, increasingly matching or beating incumbents on the metrics buyers actually care about. In personal care, biotech-derived ingredients are replacing synthetic and animal-derived inputs in a category consumers are actively reshaping. And at the extraction end, engineered organisms are recovering critical minerals and remediating contamination at a fraction of the chemical and ecological cost.

This theme follows biology out of the lab and into supply chains, and asks the question that decides everything: can it scale, and can it compete on price?

FoodTech

Conventional food production faces mounting pressure from land constraints, climate volatility, and consumer demand for alternatives to animal agriculture. This subset covers biology-based solutions across alternative proteins, precision fermentation ingredients, and food-tech applications of engineered biology.

AgTech

Global agriculture needs higher yields and resilience to climate stress without proportionally more land, water, or chemical inputs. This subset covers biological solutions for crop improvement, biological inputs (biofertilizers, biopesticides), and engineered agricultural traits.

Chemicals & Materials

Petroleum-derived chemicals and materials carry a carbon and sustainability cost that biology-based alternatives increasingly can match or beat on performance. This subset covers bio-based replacements for industrial chemicals, plastics, materials, and energy produced through engineered biological pathways.

Personal Care & Cosmetics

Consumer demand for sustainable, biotech-derived ingredients is reshaping a personal care industry historically reliant on synthetic and animal-derived inputs. This subset covers biology-based ingredients and production methods for cosmetics, hair care, and personal care products.

Biomining & Environmental Biotech

Critical mineral extraction and environmental remediation both face growing pressure to reduce the chemical and ecological cost of traditional methods. This subset covers biological approaches to metal/mineral recovery, bioremediation, and other environmental applications of engineered biology.

“SynBioBeta is a who’s who of AI and biology. This is where the future is being built, so don't miss it”

Eric Schmidt

Former CEO

For every single fund at Boom Capital, one of our best companies has come directly from SynBioBeta. I met Mammoth Bio at SynBioBeta, and I met Nabla Bio at SynBioBeta.

Nabla was accelerated into existence because of SynBioBeta. I met Seth Bannon from 50 Years, Cee Cee Schnugg from Boom Capital, and others from Y Combinator there, and those same people seeded Nabla. The vibe, leverage, and energy at SynBioBeta are unreal.
